Generally any timber that is suitable for stair construction. Whitewood, pine, ash, oak etc. is used for strings and treads, risers from ply or M.D.F suitably veneered.

Stairs that are going to be carpeted the strings only in solid timber the treads being white wood and ply risers.

Sections

Strings on stairs are machined from 38 mm thick timber. Treads machined from 32 mm thick timber.

Risers from 25 mm thick material except when using ply.

Newels are finished 90 X 90 mm.

Assembly

All straight flights are assembled with the treads and risers glued and wedged into the string housings. Risers are screwed to treads and glue blocks stuck to support to support tread to riser.

Strings are left to run through for site fitting, likewise the top riser and landing nosing are left loose.

Stairs with winders are assembled as far as practicable for transport purposes. Winder kites and risers are numbered to aid assembly. Newels are trenched out ready to receive the string tenons and treads.
